External storage media
External storage media are useful if you want to create an additional backup copy of a file or transfer files from one device to another.
Once the file transfer is complete, you must disconnect the storage medium from the system.
External USB hard drive
Caution: external hard drives are sensitive to bumps! Handle the device carefully to avoid data loss.
CD/DVD
We recommend using CDs or DVDs for long-term data backups and archiving. However, the media are subject to ageing, so the data should be transferred to new storage media every few years. For extremely large quantities of data, such as those for photos and films, the data must be divided among multiple data storage devices: Currently, a maximum of 4.7 GB per DVD (or for double-layer drives, 8.5 GB) can be stored.
USB stick
Due to their mechanical and electrical construction, we advise against using USB sticks for data backups. However, they are a convenient way to transport files from one device to another.
Please make sure to handle your files securely. We recommend that you do not store files that require protection (e.g. those with personal data) on a USB stick and carry it around the campus.
